SANTO DOMINGO (Xinhua) -- The government of the Dominican Republic on Monday sent a batch of aid and 17 doctors to help thousands of Haitians suffering from the devastation of hurricanes and tropical storms of the current season in the Atlantic Ocean.

The aid included food, drinking water, medicine, blankets and mattresses.
The medical team included gynecologists, pediatricians and 20 Haitian medical students studying and living in Dominica, who will work as translators, Public Health Ministry's spokesman Luis Garcia said.
The aid will be transported to Port au Prince, capital of Haiti, and then be distributed to the most affected areas like Gonaives north of Haiti, where water level reached three meters high.
Since mid-August, Haiti has been repeatedly swept by hurricanes and tropical storms which have killed 310 people up to now.
Among the death toll, Tropical Storm Fay killed nine, Hurricane Gustav 76, Storm Hanna 67 and Hurricane Ike 58.
The Dominican Republic and Haiti share La Expanola island in the Caribbean.
